Augusta Savage
1892-1962
Augusta Savage was a preeminent artist of the Harlem Renaissance. She studied at Cooper Union and then throughout Paris despite many instances of racial discrimination. Her artwork was so impressive that one of the judges who initially rejected her application to study in Europe invited her to use his studio to develop her skills. After spending time in Europe, she returned to the United States at the time of the Depression. In an effort to help artists find work at this time, she lobbied to help young artists find work through the Works Project Administration, which earned her directorial position at WPA’s Harlem Community Center. As a portrait sculptor she depicted the likes of Marcus Garvey and W.E.B Dubois.
